Steam Generation
Steinmüller Engineering offers engineering and construction for a wide range of steam generation solutions.
- Package solutions (water-steam cycles, heat recovery steam generators, heat exchangers)
- Additional plant optimisations (soot blowers, eco-bypass, steam drum optimisation)
The typical areas of activity differ depending on the steam generation plant.
With our in-house calculation programmes, we are able to carry out manufacturer-independent calculations – for almost all types of steam generators.
Our areas of expertise
- Fuel switch, e.g. from coal to natural gas, biomass, hydrogen or ammonia
- Performance increase of an existing plant
- Conversion to increase efficiency through lower exhaust gas temperature or higher steam parameters
- Steps to improve performance under partial load
- Increased flexibility (e.g. co-firing of substitute fuels)
- Adaptation to S(N)CR retrofits
- Reduction of start-up periods
Waste heat utilisation in industry
The industrial utilisation of waste heat is an important factor in the reduction of the consumption of primary energy. Each unit of energy that can be utilised here reduces the need for the addition of renewable energies, reduces CO2 and thus enables a faster implementation of the necessary energy transition.
Steinmüller Engineering provides solutions for decarbonisation by increasing the efficiency of your plants through heat transfer or heat recovery.
- Steel industry
- Cement industry
- Glass industry
- Chemic industry
- Concept engineering Waste heat utilisation with 30 MWth downstream of the rotary kiln and clinker cooler in a cement plant in Dotternhausen
- Basic and detail engineering for waste heat utilisation with 113 MWth in a steel plant in Germany
Heat exchanger for thermal storage
The largest source of renewable energy (wind and sun) fluctuates in terms of location and time. For a reliable and cost-effective power supply, the use of a wide range of storage systems will become necessary as the energy transition progresses.
Thermal storage is a sensible option for storage applications in the medium to high power range and with medium storage capacity (up to 24 h full load). Steinmüller Engineering offers the following components for this purpose.
- Salt / oil heat exchanger
- Salt / water-steam heat exchanger
- Gas / water-steam heat exchanger

- Supply of a molten salt steam generator with 7.5 MWth output for a modular thermal storage concept in Hungary
Components for Chemical Plants
As a chemical plant operator, you have been working with process components for many years. It is possible that the former L.&C. Steinmüller GmbH (LCS) supplied one of your devices for process steam generation. Even during this time, there were many factors to consider when it came to repairing, modernising, upgrading or replacing the existing devices in order to meet technical challenges or changing market conditions.
Steinmüller Engineering GmbH continues the tradition of L. & C. Steinmüller for chemical plant components.
- We are the sole owners of the reference rights for chemical plant components formerly built by LCS, namely:
- heat recovery systems for catalytic NH3 combustion
- process gas coolers downstream of the secondary reformer in ammonia and methanol plants
- We have been extremely successful in this product area and have been able to realise numerous projects. The following orders are particularly worthy of mention:
- Replacement of a reactor/ heat recovery steam generator (121 t/h steam) for catalytic HCN synthesis, Rhodia/Butachimie in Chalampé, France
- Modernisation of two reactors/heat recovery steam generators (2x 55.4 t/h steam) for catalytic NO synthesis, Sluiskil, Netherlands
- Supply of a process gas cooler (100 t/h steam) downstream of the secondary reformer in an NH3 plant, Yara Trinidad Ltd., Trinidad & Tobago
Due to our decades of experience in this field, we are of course also available to our customers, whether plant manufacturers or operators, for new projects with our broad expertise in engineering or delivery.
